How to make a basic Rubik's Cube costume

Step by step instructions to make your very own Rubik's Cube costume. Oooh, fun....

Supplies:
  • Ruler/tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard box (you may need more than one)
  • Coloured cardboard (2 sheets x 5 colours)
  • Strong sticky tape or masking tape
  • 15mm black electrician’s tape (approx 20 metres)
  • 50mm black tape (approx 20-30 metres)

Method:
  1. If you already have a square cardboard box, you can skip this step. If not, cut out pieces from other cardboard boxes and construct your own square box using strong sticky tape or masking tape to hold it together. Don’t worry about making the box look pretty at this stage.
Note: Our boxes measured 72cm x 72cm x 72cm and they were only just narrow enough to fit through doorways. Making them smaller would obviously have made things a bit easier. Size is especially important if you need to move the box around (for example, if you need to put it in your car). Whatever size box you use, make sure that it’s at least as wide as your shoulders.
  2. Once you have your box assembled, take a sheet of coloured cardboard and place it on one of the sides. You are aiming to have the coloured cardboard cover the entire side of the box with only a small (1-2cm) border around the edge. If the cardboard is too long, cut it to size. If the cardboard is too short, cut an appropriately sized section from the second piece to create a square shape. Use four small pieces of sticky tape or masking tape to lightly hold the coloured cardboard in place
  3. Using a ruler or measuring tape, divide each side of the coloured cardboard square into three equal parts. Mark a small line to show where each section is. On our box, each cardboard square was approximately 69cm in length, so we made marks at 23cm and 46cm.
  4. Use the 15mm black electrician’s tape to mark lines from the marks on one side of the cardboard to the marks on the opposite side. When you have finished, your coloured cardboard should be evenly divided into nine squares.
  5. Complete steps 2-4 for each of the other sides of the cube.
  6. Take the 50mm black tape and use it to secure all of the edges of the coloured cardboard to the box. Ideally, the tape should only overlap the coloured cardboard by about 5mm. The tape should also be wide enough to cover the edges of the box, helping to make it visually appealing as well as strengthening it.
  7. Cut out the middle square from the top of the cube. Use the 50mm tape to cover the four sides of the hole.
